4 Tips to Staying Healthy in College

Tip 1: Personalize Your Routine

When you first start college it may be a challenge to maintain your healthy habits for many reasons, heavy course loads, and missing family and friends are just a few. Keeping a planner or using an iPad or smartphone to keep track of your schedule is really important to make the best use of your time. Have a general time that you go to bed and wake up so that you are getting enough sleep (e.g. 10:00pm and 7:00am). Plan a recurring time for working out and studying each week and bring a friend or join intramural sports to keep yourself accountable. Most importantly make sure you have fun!

Tip 2: Free Gym time!

St. Lawrence College provides its students with a free YMCA membership, as well as access to the SHAC and gym on campus. This is a great way to stay in shape as it is convenient, free and offers a variety of options for you and your friends to choose from. The gym offers a free personal training session to students every month as well as group fitness classes if you prefer working out in a group environment.

Tip 3: Meal Preparation is your Friend

This tip might seem obvious to many of you, but eating out oftentimes adds to your waistline while taking away from your wallet. By preparing food at home you are able to plan your meals in advance, cooking several meals at once to help counteract those fast food cravings. Check out the “Easy Recipes” section of this blog for delicious, and healthy meal ideas.

Taylors Tip: “I recommend that you eat sweet potatoes because they are awesome and tasty plus high in protein and fiber.”

Tip 4: Fill up on H2O

ALWAYS bring your favourite water bottle with you and make sure it holds enough water for you! This will make it more likely for you to get the recommended water intake a day. Drinking water is very important and can help with your studies as well as managing weight and dehydration. SLC has water stations situated around the college which are perfect for filling up a reusable water bottle.
