Residence – Myths Vs. Realities

I know from experience that the last week before moving away from home into your college residence can be stressful. There is a lot going through your mind:

  1. What if I forget something?
  2. What if I become homesick?
  3. Did I pack enough/too much?
  4. What if residence just isn’t for me?

Well don’t worry! St. Lawrence College, the residence staff and advisors will try their best to make the transition into your new home-away-from-home as easy as possible. As peer contacts it is also our job to do the same! We encourage you to reach out to us with any questions, concerns or even if you want a student connection within the college.

But first, to put your mind at ease, here are some residence myths and realities:

Myth: Residence is just a place to sleep.

Reality: Residence is more than a place to sleep. Yes, that is an large portion of what you will do while you are there but there is so much more to living in residence. Residence is a place you will spend countless hours enjoying life with friends, meeting new people, studying and more. There are various common areas where residents can play ping pong, watch television, study and hang out with friends. In addition, the Resident Advisors have planned activity days/nights on and off campus – whether that is a pizza party, bingo, ice skating or heading to Toronto to see the Blue Jays play a game!

Myth: I am going to gain the ‘Freshman 15’.

Reality: This may happen to you if you allow yourself to over indulge. Living on your own for the first time, without your parents watching you, what you eat, or who you spend time with can make it easy to acquire bad eating habits. Luckily, the college offers various healthy alternatives to avoid the freshman 15. In addition, you are fortunate to live in a residence that allows for some cooking appliances – microwaves, toasters, electric frying pan (pretty much anything without an open flame). This way, you can pack healthy food and cook it in your own residence room. Check out our pages on easy recipes to find some simple recipes you can make in your residence room!

Myth: I am locked into residence no matter what.

Reality: No you are not. Sometimes after the first few months of living in residence you realize that it is not for you. Well, at St. Lawrence College, you are not signing a 12-month lease. Payments are split into equal payments per semester. So, if you want to move out of residence, you can after the first semester. We hope that this is not the case and that you enjoy residence but still want you to know that this option is available and that you are not locked in no matter what.

Remember, residence is a time for making friends, learning independence and having fun. Don’t let the fear of missing out, gaining weight or feeling awkward stop you from embracing this new experience to the fullest. You will likely never again have the opportunity to have such a unique living experience, and these are the memories you will carry with you well beyond the next few years – so enjoy it!
