Healthy Tips on Dining Out

There are times where you won’t be able to avoid going out to a restaurant for dinner. If you’re still wanting to stay on track of your healthy lifestyle while you go out to eat here are some helpful tips!

Plan ahead! If you know you’re going to be going out to dinner that night try your best to eat lighter meals throughout the day. Take a look at the menu online before hand if the option is there, so you can get a feel for what they offer.

When it comes to ordering, there are plenty of options to choose from; however don’t be fooled into thinking things labelled vegetarian or gluten free are good for you. In fact, many gluten free dishes have more calories (and more sugar) due to the extra ingredients they have to have to make up for the gluten missing. Some people prefer to double up their appetizer or replace their fries with a salad. Ordering a salad is a wise decision! (To avoid anything fatty and keep the dressing on the side.)

Staying clear of any sugary drinks by drinking lots of water throughout your meal is a good idea. Restaurants tend to double (or even triple) their portion sizes when serving food. Therefore, a lot of people end up overeating without realizing it. Keep track of your portion sizes and don’t be afraid to ask to box up whatever you can’t finish!

Desserts aren’t ideal when you’re trying to be healthy at a restaurant, but if your sweet tooth takes over there are a few things you can do. If it’s possible try and split your dessert with a friend. If splitting the dessert isn’t an option, try going for desserts low in calories such as gelato or something that contains more fruit. Although you must remember that everything is good in moderation and that it’s okay to treat yourself every once in a while!
